Puppy Training Program
A non-residential program for puppies aged 2–5 months and their owners: getting to know your dog, motivation, toilet and crate training and basic obedience, all with the owner taking part.
The first months after your puppy comes home lay the foundation for the relationship you will build. The Puppy Training Program is designed for puppies aged 2–5 months and their owners; it is non-residential, which means you do not leave your dog with us: you learn the training together with your dog. When the program ends, you know what to do and why.
What does the program cover?
Getting to know your dog
- What is a dog and what do they need?
- Feeding and care needs
- Building a shared language between owner and dog and reading body language
Motivation
- Creating motivation through food and play drive
- Obedience principles built on motivation
Everyday life
- Toilet training is done together with the owners
- Box (crate) training
- Approaches to common issues such as eating from the ground and barking that seems to have no reason
- Socialization by working alongside other dogs
Basic obedience
- Walking on the leash outdoors without pulling
- Heel, sit, down, stay and come
- The “release” command and taking a requested position
Why with the owners?
Your dog will spend most of the day with you, so the owner should be part of the training. You take part in the sessions, get to know your dog, learn techniques for control and guidance, and become able to cope on your own with problems you may meet.
Reward-based work
The program uses reward- and play-based, positive methods. The puppy is rewarded when they do the wanted behavior, so learning is enjoyable for them. If you notice uncontrolled behavior in your dog, you can talk with our trainers and plan the work around your puppy’s situation.
Age range and starting
The program is for puppies aged 2–5 months. It is most helpful to start soon after the puppy comes home; see Getting Started with Training for details and Puppy Training for the general framework. If you later want to continue, you can move on with Obedience Training.
