Getting Started with Training
When should dog training start? At 2–3 months for puppies, and today for adult dogs: how we work with a reward-based approach.
The question we hear most often about dog training is when to begin. The short answer: the earlier the easier, but you are not too late. A puppy learns new things quickly and picks up the right behavior before habits have set in; you can also work with an adult dog, it simply takes more repetition and patience.
When should you start with a puppy?
Your dog starts learning from the moment they arrive: where to eat, where to go to the toilet, how to approach people. That is why we recommend starting training at around 2–3 months, soon after the puppy comes home. The issues owners most often ask for help with are feeding routine, toilet habits, jumping up at people and chewing; these tend to take shape in the first few months and are much easier to manage when they are addressed early.
With adult dogs
If your dog is an adult and some behaviors are giving you trouble, it is not too late to begin. We look at the habits already in place and prepare a plan built on rewards. Every dog’s temperament, age and history are different, so we arrange the work accordingly.
How training works with us
- We work with reward-based, positive methods. The dog learns that wanted behavior pays off and enjoys working.
- Each dog’s ability, energy and needs are assessed individually; exercise is part of the program.
- Home routine is covered too: learning free and restricted areas, guiding biting and chewing, and a regular walking routine.
- You are part of the process. We work with you on how to communicate with your dog and meet their needs.
A program for puppies and their owners
In our program for puppies aged 2–5 months and their owners, you learn how to train your dog yourself. See Puppy Training Program for details; Puppy Training will also guide you through getting to know your puppy and the first steps.
