Protection Dog Training

Protection training: bringing prey and defense drives under control with an expert trainer under controlled conditions; suitability is assessed at an appointment.

Protection Dog Training

Protection training is the most serious and demanding of dog training types. A common mistake is to assume that a large dog can do “protection work” on its own. In fact, defense and bite work need both mental and physical preparation; this expectation is especially common with German Shepherds, Rottweilers, Dobermans and other large breeds. At Hause of İstanbul this work is carried out by expert trainers and under controlled conditions.

The aim: control

The aim of protection training is to bring a dog’s already strong prey and defense drives under control. The dog acts only on the handler’s command, releases on command, and the handler can guide them at every moment. An uncontrolled dog is not the goal of this work; it is its risk.

Not every dog is suitable

In a suitable candidate we look for:

  • A sound nervous system as a puppy and freedom from fear
  • A curious and brave character with a strong prey drive
  • Highly developed senses of touch and smell

We assess together at an appointment whether your dog will take this training. Adult dogs take protection training together with their owners.

Why an expert is essential

If protection training is not given by an expert, it becomes harder to get good results and dangerous situations can arise, such as the dog taking over control. For that reason we do not recommend doing this work at home or with an inexperienced person.

Duration

How long the training takes depends on the dog’s characteristics and the quality of the work; we cannot promise a set time.

The wider picture

Protection work is usually built on solid basic obedience, so we recommend starting with Obedience Training. For the sport side see Schutzhund Training.
